When you move into your first living space – whether it is a home you purchased or an apartment you are renting – you’ll need a few essential items. These are some regular household items you simply can’t live without.
- Tools – No homeowner or renter can get by without the basic set of tools (hammer/nails, screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a wrench).
- Dishes – You can get by on paper plates and plastic spoons and forks for a while, but you’ll want to entertain guests at some point. Get yourself some real dishes.
- Curtains – for privacy and sleep or that blinding hot sun, curtains or blinds will help immensely.
- Plunger – Just when you expect it least, you’ll have a plumbing problem. The plunger may be one of the most overlooked essential household items.
- Cleaning Products – Broom and mop, bleach, floor wax, dish soap, and laundry detergent. You will always have something to clean, either after a meal or after a week’s worth of living. You may even need a water bucket and some rubber gloves. If you have carpet, you’ll need a vacuum cleaner.
- Alarms – In most jurisdictions today, fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are mandatory.
- Flashlight – If the lights go out and don’t come back on for a few hours you may need to go into the basement or check the circuit box.
- Sewing Kit – You might need to sew on a button.
- First Aid Kit – No one plans to get hurt, but you never know when you’ll injure yourself unexpectedly. Be sure to have bandages, gauze, a thermometer, anti-bacterial products, ointments, etc. on hand.
- Iron and Ironing Board – You can lay your shirts and dresses on the coffee table or dining room table to iron them, but you’ll definitely need an iron – especially if you work a professional job where grooming is expected. And while you can live without the ironing board, it’s still good to have one.
Moving to a new home has its challenges, so plan ahead and be prepared with these home essentials.
